Yu-Gi-Oh! mechanic
Alternate Win Conditions
Ways to win without reducing Life Points to zero.
How it works
Most games are won by reducing the opponent's Life Points to zero. A few cards offer another route. The best-known is Exodia, a monster made of five separate cards that wins the game if a player gathers all of them.
Alternate win conditions are rare, which is part of why they have such a strong identity. They are often built around risk, because the pieces must survive in your hand.
The Exodia pieces from Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon are a staple of the game's pop-culture image and a favorite among collectors who like set completion.
In practice
An example in play
Mia opens a duel with a hand of five cards. Two of them are Exodia pieces, including Exodia the Forbidden One. She needs the other three, and every turn she draws one card. Her opponent cannot see her hand, so they have to decide whether to race her Life Points or to disrupt a plan they can only guess at.
That is the heart of this win condition. The pieces must stay in your hand until all five gather there. A deck built around Exodia usually plays like a patient waiting game, because the game cannot be won by size alone. Compare that with a duel where Blue-Eyes White Dragon simply attacks until Life Points reach zero.
Common mistakes
- Counting pieces in the wrong place. The pieces win only when all five are in your hand. A piece in the graveyard does not count.
- Forgetting the other win routes. You also win if your opponent must draw and has no cards left in their deck, so an empty deck matters. Keep an eye on how many cards both players have left.
- Expecting it to happen often. Drawing all five is not something you can count on. Most duels still end by Life Points.
- Mixing up the head with the whole set. The head is just one of five cards. A collector who owns it has one-fifth of the project.
