Magic mechanic
Paying a smaller cost for a one-time effect.
Evoke gives a creature two ways to be cast. The normal way puts the creature on the battlefield. The other way costs less, usually by exiling another card, but the creature is sacrificed right after its enter-the-battlefield effect happens.
The keyword first appeared in Morningtide in 2008. It lets a powerful effect be used at little cost while keeping the option of a full-price creature later.
Fury from Modern Horizons 2 is a well-known example, a red creature whose evoke option made it a talking point for players.
You are behind on the table, and your opponent has just played something that threatens to take over the game. In your hand is Fury. You have two ways to cast it, and the choice is the whole point of the keyword.
The full way puts a large red creature on the battlefield. It stays, it attacks, and it keeps being a problem for the other side. The evoke way costs less, usually by exiling another card. The creature arrives, its enter-the-battlefield effect happens, and then it is sacrificed right after. You get the effect and lose the body.
Which one is right? If you are racing, the cheaper route may save a turn. If you have time and mana, the full route gives you the effect and a creature. Fury has double strike, so a creature that stays is no small thing.
The card belongs to a cycle of five Elemental Incarnations, one in each color. You can see where it fits in Modern Horizons 2.
It first appeared in Morningtide in 2008. The Modern Horizons 2 version brought it back in a new form.
Both are alternate ways to cast a creature, but they go different directions. Dash brings the creature back to your hand. Evoke sacrifices it.
